Mode Apartments - San Mateo, California

We have been staying here for a year and will be extending our lease. It has been an enjoyable stay and here are a number of nice things about the complex:
- It is a safe gated community. We like having a roofed garage that is only accessible to the tenants. We go to the gym very often too.
- The amenities are new. The kitchen is great. The dishwasher can clean dishes well with less scrubbing. The washer and dryer are newer models. We specifically looked for an apartment without those older washer/dryer units.
- The apartment has an AC.
- We love the community events and look forward to more milk tea/pizza/Halloween/Christmas events. The complex has their own club house that can also be reserved for private events.
- Peter and his team have been very responsive in taking care of our maintenance requests.

We recently moved out of MODE apartment after a wonderful year. Our experience was nothing short of exceptional. If we could give it more than 5 stars, we would.

The apartment complex is clean and as soon as you enter the hallways, a soft scent welcomes you. The quality of material used to build the apartments is top notch quality and the staff is amazing. We never had any issues!

The USP of these apartments is the proximity to all the amazing restaurants, grocery stores in San Mateo. It is also well situated for all the best hiking spots in the peninsula.

We miss our little San Mateo home and will always be so special for us. <3

Lived here for 2 years and had a great 2 bed 2 bath. Style is modern, Community Room has tons of space, a little modern vending machine, and a kitchen you can reserve for parties. Also on the property is a gym with treadmills, weights, erg machine, etc, and small yoga room which I sometimes used for dance practice. There's two spacious outdoor courtyards (one with a firepit and propane grill). There's also a tiny dog park, and a package locker in the underground garage.

Peter and Jasmine in the office are super helpful and nice, and throw great parties in the community room every once in a while! Anytime I needed a new lightbulb or small repair, the Engineer Romel always came the next business day to fix it. No pest issues, they have a service coming for preventative care that I see around.

You can hear the train horn sometimes depending on where you are in the building, but it's not that bad as another place I was at in Burlingame. Overall, good place and good people 🙂

Never consider this place unless you are okay with:

1) The remote for the parking garage frequently does not work and no one can help to solve the problem immediately to let you in. Making a call to the emergency number also did not help because the staff could only provide the solution by asking you to wait outside of the garage until the other resident enter/exit the parking garage or park on the street.

2) The staff who work over the weekend in the office has no access to fix the remote during the weekend and resident being asked to wait until Monday.

3) Your key access to the apartment be suddenly denied and no one can fix it during the weekend and have to wait until Monday.

4) Not getting respond from the staff regardless of multiple emails and visits to the office asking to fix the issues.

Regardless of the high amount of the rent, the service of this apartment is really disappointing. Staff is not responsive at all.

Mode is very beautiful and clean outside and inside. The staff that I have encountered are friendly, professional, communicative and responsive. The studio I live is cheap (relatively speaking) but does not have a real window (it's a door with glass in the middle) and does not have great sunshine so it can be bit depressing at times. After move out they promptly refunded my deposit and I think the deductions are fair.

Lived here for a year and it was a great experience! The apartment complex and the unit itself is modern and well maintained. The management and maintenance teams are friendly, responsive and reasonable. They also host occasional gatherings with free food and lucky draws. Didn't have any trouble moving out either. The gym is small but not usually crowded. It's also walkable-ish to a Safeway/ Starbucks (15min) and also 5 min walk away from the Hayward Park Caltrain station. Overall 👍

We lived in Mode for about a year. Mode was very nice. Amenities are well kept and I like the "smallness" of the community. I've been in bigger apartment that just doesn't have the ambience of a small apartment. Everything is near the apartment. All areas are well kept. We personally followed Peter from a previous apartment because he's a very good community manager. We have to move because of my wife's relocation but we definitely recommend Mode.

My 6 years at Mode from Feb 2016 to Dec 2022 were great. Management and maintenance were always responsive and helpful. The property was well maintained, with nice outdoor eating/sitting spaces, convenient/well-kept exercise room and equipment, clean indoor trash/mail/common areas and covered parking. Neighbors were quiet and amicable. Location was ideal, close to downtown San Mateo, plenty of nearby grocery stores/restaurants/gas stations/shopping centers, and close access to the 92, 101 and 280 freeways. Rent was competitive. Would recommend Mode in a heartbeat.
