It's the best spot to take your best shots at. Just take out what you bring in. It's gets crowed on the weekends by 9am, (which is when I last went) But I did go on a weekday in the morning, and there were only 3 other persons at this location other than myself and a friend.

It will be slow going for anyone driving any vehicle that isn't a truck or SUVl. That's because of the washboard like surface that the dirt road has that you have to drive on to find yourself a shooting spot.

Just follow the rail road tracks, past the "no shooting" signage posted when you turn off of Split Mountain Road. Enjoy.

Lastly, please keep the area clean and bring plenty of shade and water because, as other posters have mentioned, "Thar ain't no refreshments in the desert, foo."

It's the desert near Ocotillo Wells. About two hours and a hundred miles drive from San Diego. Curvy roads, RVs and desert toys will slow you down both ways. Mile or less of rocky dirt road past "Do not shoot here" signs. Find empty space to shoot on side of the road. Bring your targets it's the desert. There is no water, food or service close by if you get a flat tire or break down. Although you could probably get help from other Freedom Loving people in the area, plan accordingly. Lots of dirt blowing around, keep you vehicle windows up while you're shooting and take your trash with you when you leave.
**Maybe important if you've never been here; Online map directions will probably get you to the signs that say do not shoot here. You'll need to drive past those signs on the dirt road and you'll see places to stop and shoot on the right side of the road towards the hills.

A great place to shoot, 4x4 not needed dirt road is compacted. You'll see the signs of where you can legally shoot about a mile down the road. Please pick up after yourself.

Pretty nice spot to shoot. Split mountain road is a bit rough comming down (paved road) the dirt road to get to the shoot spot is pretty decent even though it's dirt. You could definitely take a 2wd car down there. Was a bit dirty since people don't pick their trash up.

Fun area to shoot. But PLEASE clean up your site. Shot shellS, brass, targets. If you bring Junk to shoot take the junk with you and dispose of it at the dump. The BLM isn't a dump site. If you don't, the state of California will shut it down like they did KITCHEN Creek. BRING A RAKE AND A BUCKET, DO YOUR PART!!!

Great spot to shoot at and surprisingly good cell reception, but can someone please pave the dirt road that parallels the rail road track (at least far enough down the road until one can reach BLM territory). It's already bad enough having to drive 4 hours round trip to legally shoot outdoors, but I don't want to also have to buy a truck or 4WD vehicle to do so. I know some of the other reviews say this area is easily accessible, but my sedan felt like it was about to fall apart and I was going slower than walking speed. I recommend bringing a spare tire if you come here because some of the rocks in the road and the potholes on Split Mountain road (caused by the heavy Gypsum Mine trucks) look like they could ruin your day.

Great location to camp and shoot, please clean up before you leave. Accessible by most vehicles, just be cautious where you park as there are areas of soft sand past the first wash with the pipes/bridge. Also, be careful riding OHVs on the access road west of where shooting is allowed, as the Rangers will ticket you
