I lived at Vara for almost 4 years and really enjoyed my experience. My unit overlooked Mission St, was spacious, and had tons of storage space. It was well-maintained, maintenance requests were filled quickly and with high-quality, and the office staff was friendly and helpful. The building is close to public transportation so that makes navigating the Bay area very easy. It's in the north part of the Mission so it features all that the Mission has to offer - access to restaurants, shops, and bars, but also some of the grit. For me, it was a mix of great unit, great location, and great value.

The apartment itself was well-maintained, and the staff is friendly. However, I would advise applicants to be absolutely certain they want to llive here before applying. There is a $250 deposit to apply, and getting a refund is extremely difficult if you choose not to commit. Despite my efforts and extenuating circumstances that prevented me from moving in, I was unable to get my deposit back, even after multiple discussions with the property manager. Be cautious and fully informed before making any commitments.

I moved into Vara sight unseen and with very little time to spare. Kurtis was a great help in getting me the details I needed help with, coordinating my reservations for the loading dock, even letting me unleash frustration by listening to me vent my frustrations that were just a result of a sudden and unexpected job change from Chicago to SF. You can't ask for better managers and staff when they know the difference between someone going through something and someone truly needing assistance.

After several months here, I upgraded to a larger apartment and Kurtis made the process easy and seamless for me, including if I elected to move elsewhere. Knowing my job, the chance of me leaving Vara is floating out there, which will be sad because it truly is a great community.

To address some of the other comments about the neighborhood and what not. Yes, this building is right off of Mission St and near the 16th St Mission BART Station. It is going to have weekend vending on the sidewalks and in the parking lot behind our building. Kurtis and team have worked very hard to make the frustrations known, but at the end of the day, we are in the second most densely populated city in the US (behind NYC), so you are bound to get city noise, dirt, and junk. Take the good with the bad.

What you should be happy about is that Vara takes cleanliness seriously and you constantly see the team outside cleaning thinks up.

I love the building. The staff who work there. They are all very friendly. They support you when you need help. They are pending. If we are well in the apartment. I would definitely recommend it to any friend or family membe

The Vara added incorrect fees to our account after move out. We tried to work with them, but communication was terrible. After a year of no response from Vara, we were contacted by a debt collection agency, even though the last statement we had received showed a $0 outstanding balance. We were then strong armed by the debt collection agency to pay the full (incorrect) outstanding amount. Oh, they also made us pay the full amenity fee during Covid even though they closed all the amenities.

Vara is a great complex. Been here close to a year now, nice quality combined with prime location. Staff is pretty responsive / easy to contact and you can’t beat the Mission.

I love the way the building is managed by the staff. They are responsive, caring, respectful, organize events for the residents and they make it a delight living here. The building is always clean and when something breaks, it gets fixed right away. I think it is the best building in the Mission. I certainly love living here.
