DO NOT RENT HERE. Although the property is nice and Vanessa, the maintenance supervisor is amazing, The Dwight will illegally withhold return your security deposit.

My roommates and I moved out on May 15, 2024. After 21 days, were not given our deposit back, a list of deductions, or any sort of communication. After calling, we only got excuses and started getting hung up on by management. Only after numerous follow-up emails and calls was a check for a partial amount sent out (with no itemized list of deductions), over THREE MONTHS after move-out. This is ILLEGAL pursuant to Cal. Civ. Code §1950.5.

Beware of this property if you expect the return of your security deposit.

Edit: You have my email and deposit return address. Give me my money back.

Management was very helpful when the fridge broke. Got a replacement for us very quickly was very nice the whole time. Definitely made a stressful situation much easier. Very appretiated

If you live here, you will be subjected to breaches of California Tenant Law. When you inform the management of this, even through gentle reminders and polite emails, they will ghost you. Your packages will be stolen with no concern. The rent is high enough as it is...

Updating to say it has now been 5 months since we moved out and we have still not received our security deposit. Incompetent management that pretends to care during correspondence, but will continue to ignore you when you aren't actively pestering them

As I am nearing the end of my two years at The Dwight, I feel that it's the perfect time to leave a review. I love The Dwight, and I cannot say that about the multiple other apartments I have lived in throughout the state. Not only is it a modern, beautiful, safe building, but the management is top tier. From the head of maintenance, Vanessa, who is one of the best humans I have ever met to Carly in the leasing office who is always available and happy to help me with any question I have; the people who work and live here are what make it feel like home. I feel extremely lucky to have found this place while living in Berkeley as everyone else who I speak to (that don't live at The Dwight) have some sort of complaint about their living situation. I have never had an issue here with noise, plumbing, electric, heating/AC, etc, and if I were, the wonderful management team would resolve it for me quickly. It's the perfect place to rent in Berkeley. I highly recommend that you explore The Dwight as your next place to live in the East Bay, it's absolutely worth it!

The staff is great, the building is safe and secure, although Shattuck is pretty loud and you'll see the typical downtown Berkeley homeless from time to time. It's close to really good restaurants, and the rooftop patio is truly wonderful. Not everything works all the time, like the stack parking - it's gone down in "error" mode three times in nine months that I know of, but it's repaired quickly, the outdoor lighting for the dog area has never worked, and the public space wi-fi connects you to nothing, but we've had no problems with service orders when we've needed them for our actual apartment. There's usually a referral deal so shoot me a message if you want to learn more. 🙂

I was considering renting at The Dwight, but after speaking to others who have rented or looked into the property, it has become apparent that management is not professional. More importantly, it is common for management to not return security deposits despite state tenant law. The building seems to have such potential, but must make fundamental improvements to their administration and legal compliance processes.

I since vacated the building, here is a complete review of my experience.

I have not received a refund of deposit after vacating my unit over 56 days, in the lease and by California civic code I should have received it within 21days. The management were unable to provide me with proof that my cheque has been dispatched and now have gone quiet in the matter I am unable to reach them. I was also advised by management to pay for a cleaner and I’d get refunded, this never happened.

Other issues included:
My toilet would continuously overflow with waste water from other units, which smelt terribly and also was a health issue. I repeatedly requested for it to be fixed nothing was done.
The management were unable to get dog owners to collect their dog’s poo leaving areas covered in it.
I had packages stolen from inside the building.
The call box doesn’t work anytime you have a visitor you have to let them in.
